Unlike a nurse, doctor or midwife, doulas support both the Mom and Partner throughout pregnancy, birth and postpartum. During labor and delivery, the doula is a constant presence providing physical and emotional support along with informational resources to help achieve the most optimal birthing experience.
Physical Support

Certified doulas have been trained in many different techniques and comfort measures to both equip and support you throughout pregnancy and delivery.
Emotional Support

In those hard moments during labor, a doula is there to provide invaluable encouragement and reassurance that everything you are feeling is normal and each passing moment is a moment closer to meeting your baby.
Informational Support

There are going to be a lot of decisions to make throughout the birthing process- some you may have never considered until you are deep into labor. A doula support you to make informed decisions about your care with relevant information and resources. Throughout pregnancy the doula has an arsenal of resources to answer any maternity care questions you may have in preparing and planning your ideal birthing experience.
What a Birthing Doula is Not
- They do not carry out clinical tasks – This includes taking blood pressure, fetal heart monitoring, taking your temperature, vaginal exams etc.
- They do not make decisions for you– I will provide you with any requested information to help you make the best-informed decision. I will remind you of your birth plan if things seem to be deviating from your original wishes.
- They do not speak to the staff on your behalf– I will discuss your concerns with you and suggest options, but you or your partner will speak directly to the clinical staff and care provider.
- They do not replace a supporting birth partner– The support of your loved one is a crucial instrumental part of your birthing experience, and a doula cannot replace them. As a doula, I help support your rhythm, make suggestions for comfort measures, and allow any other birthing support persons to take needed breaks.
“She thought of so many things that I hadn’t considered might be helpful during labor even though I’d read quite a few books to prepare. I enthusiastically recommend her!” – Chelsea
